I just found some molded packing styrofoam on a rack around where I work. I picked up a piece just to fiddle with and rip apart for fun. But this foam is different than anything I've seen before. It is medium grey, reasonably lightweight and _remarkably_ STRONG, yet resiliant. I mean its really hard to break, so I am emphasizing "strong" here. It is nowhere near as damageable as spyder foam or styrofoam, and pretty resiliant (not nearly as soft as EPP, but scarcely deforms when dented, so could probably take lots of abuse). I think a slope trainer or combat kit might be able to be made from it... maybe a kit that didn't need to be wrapped in tape or covered. The molded surface of this 'styrofoam' is smooth, so hotwiring would probably produce a strong smooth well-shaped wing right off the bow. For a 48" wing glider you *might* be able to get away with no spar. Its that tough. If anyone who can really evaluate this stuff in a practical way and share with the community their thoughts wants me to send them a chunk, I can. I don't want to send more than 5 or so pieces out total, so I'd like to get 'serious inquiries only'. -Paul RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
