This isn't necessary, EPP is very porous and the paint will stay put, you need to put a light coat on first though. You can also apply paint, then 3m spray 90, then another thin coat of paint over the glue while it is still wet and then apply clear packing tape. 3m highland is the only one that I have found to stand up to UV though.
