I use Scotch #600 clear tape in 1/2" width. It's completely clear and glossy - properly applied to a clean surface and gently rubbed down, it's invisible from more than a foot away.
I also use this stuff as a protective layer where the wing sections join, so the colored tape won't lift the paint.
