I flew Watson A/s model today for about 10 minutes. I flew it for about 5 minutes Thursday before Poway. Bill and I set up our models completely differently on the Trans. side. We use the same CG's usually. Bill uses Exponental on Rudder and Elevator. I don't like this. That said, we had pretty good lift at Pierce today.
Matt Gewain Noted that the A/s model goes up without rolling one way or the other. Bill says he uses about 8 Clicks more rudder trim on the A/s than on his other symetric models. After a while I removed 5 clicks and that seemed to remove the heavy left wing condition and the model still launches straight. The model weighs 10 oz. +- and the wing is offset to the left about 5" +-. The wing area is ballanced side to side. The MAC is the same on both sides. It seems to climb really well in smooth thermals when you turn into the long wing. In Roudy thermals you turn into the short wing. Basically, it climbs really well turning either direction; it does circle tighter into the short wing as you would expect. Bill considers this to be a light lift calm air model. He used the AG-16 profile. The one thing that seems to have suffered is L/D at high speed. This is not a model where you would want to start home from low down wind. For me, the visual ques you see when you are turning look wrong both directions. In Pitch, I kept thinking I was going to tip stall both directions but it didn't. I attribute this to Exponential. During high speed runs and dives I kept thinking the model would roll into the short wing, but it did not. I got it going straight down in a dive and there was no roll either direction. On Sat. before the contest started at Poway, Bill detirmined his still air time was 21 sec greater with the A/s wing than with his other models. If you consider a sink rate of 1.1 to 1.2 feet per second, than an addidional of 23 to 25 feet is needed. Watching bill throw a conventional model over our 60" (Measured) Euclyptus tree this morning, it is easy to see the additional altitude when he throws the A/s model. What would work for me with this model would be to have a seperate model setup on Bills transmitter so the setup suits me. The model flys beautifully although it is disconcerting to look at. I would kill for the extra 25' on launch. I can sure see this concept being developed into a Killer Aleron model, and launching even higher. JDK RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
