Perhaps the reason so many people on this list are having problems spelling is that they have been doing a lot of soldering....

Solder tips:
1) Avoid having face over rising smoke before it rises :)
2) Slowly exhale for each solder connection.
3) Continue exhaling as you run away.
4) Make sure to run upwind and inhale that fresh air.
5) Think about your next solder, take a deap breath and run inside.

Cheap super fume hood:
Take a 5 gallon bucket (bucket upgradeable at any time) upside down with a hole in the bottom.
Suspend it a few inches above your solder area.
Get a cheap wet dry vac ($25 or so) or go for the gas one if you want.
Also get a 25 foot extension hose.
Place the vac downwind, outside a window, in a tree.
Wet the inner filter with soap and water to help catch fine particles, poisons, inert material,
DNA altering and cancerous fumes.
Use an extension cord and run it along the hose to the vac.
Control the power with a power strip next to your soldering iron.

If someone asks you what the goofy bucket is have them look inside.
Flip on the switch to release their hands from the bucket.

Tell them you are serious about fumes and that they can smoke in your garage as long as they keep
their head in the bucket :)

For carbon cutting perhaps the bucket could be placed on the bottom?
