A few years ago at the Mid South contest, I was invited to view the new Joe Wurts video, The Three R's of Soaring. I found the video fascinating even though it didn't tell me anything I hadn't discovered in almost 40 years of thermal soaring. What Joe did was to clearly explain what I had observed over the years but never put it all together in such a clear and logical way.
Much to my disgust, half way through the video, someone said that was enough and replaced the Wurts video with the latest Endless Lift video. The Endless Lift video was fluff. Just eye candy. Very entertaining but didn't tell me much. As soon as I got home, I ordered a copy of The Three R's. Don't get me wrong. I like eye candy but that's desert. I prefer more meat and potatoes videos that explain what is going on. I have several slope soaring video tapes but prefer the one where Joe Wurts explains Dynamic Soaring. I note that RCSD have suspended taking subscriptions and are posting RCSD in Pretty Dam Fouledup format on the internet. I hope that doesn't mean that the Jerry and Judy are suspending the printed copy. I can't thumb through a PDF file or carry it to the reading room. I hope this doesn't mean more emphasis on photographs at the expense of text, drawings, and graphs. There has been a big improvement in RCSD lately with all the increased technical articles. I especially like the Mark Drela articles and am happy to see that Dave Register's Tech Topics column is back. Hope they can keep it up.
