Yes, it is true. But for mechanical reasons multistrand is preferred. Insulated is also not required but is preferred for both mechanical and electrical reasons. Generally speaking you can use most any conductor. I've used music wire too, when the installation lended itself to do so. I know one guy who used the burglar alarm window foil. But mechanical durability is often overlooked and just taken for granted. An installation can be thought acceptable when it's really doomed to eventually fail.
