The nails fashioned into pliers is an inventive and impressive solution.

What we're looking at is essentially a "Snap Ring Pliers". All that's needed
is a pair of pliers whose tips separate when the handle is squeezed.

Or, you could grind the tips of a needle nose pliers into a flat and
suitable shape. Then just separate the handles to remove the ball link.
Super simple and very cheap since a high quality tool is unnecessary.

There's a plethora of choices.
