Greetings!

The May 2005 issue of Air and Space magazine, a Smithsonian publication, has a great article on flying full scale, ultralite sailplanes. The "Lighthawk" is a 15 meter plane with a total weight of 200 lbs (and doesn't look anything like a Bubbledancer ;-) ). These planes have very low sink rates and can climb out on the smallest thermals and bubbles and excel at flying below 1000 feet. Sound familiar. Most interesting was the discussion of using Dynamic Soaring techniques to keep the planes up. These techniques are similar to what folks do along windy ridges and point to useful techniques for utilizing winds on flat lands. Most interesting. Get a copy of you can find one.

Cheers,

Bill
