Actually, I'd say the exact opposite is true. To not comment publicly about
such an offense would only spread the impression to others that it's accepted
behavior. Matters like this definitely need to be brought out in the open for
public discussion.

On the other hand, private emails tend to brand you as the self-appointed
"list police", and as Pat McCleave wrote, "people might start calling you
Gordy." I had to killfile Gordy for his hostile private emails, and I
certainly wouldn't want others to killfile me for the same reason.
