John,
Your are right about the 'bone yard', while I was stationed at DMAFB in
the late 50's, we use earn extra money stripping copper out of old acft and
other usable items, on my arrival date in 1956, just behind the guard shack
at the then entrance, sat the 'Enoa Gay'. One of my duties as an acft
records clerk was to log out of service certain USAF acft that was going
into the bone yard for the 43rd Bomb Wing, (B-47) one I will remember was
the first B-36, tail #036, had sat in one of wing sqd. areas for about 3
weeks, then one day they started it up, taxied out on to the runway, our
bomb wing maintance officer came into our office and said, you guys watch
that B-36, it is making its last flight as a milatary aircraft. It took
off, made two patterns around DM, landed and taxied to the bone yard. An
hour or so later the crew chief brought the maintenance records into our
office as directed. I retired the paper of the first B-36. That was in
1958, a little later I was transferred to Camp Cooke, CA, now known as
Vandenberg AFB.

The aircraft "Bone Yard" down at DMAFB in Tucson is an incredible site. It
has been a long time since I've visited, but I think there are tours
available.
