Are any clubs flying any type of One-Design event? Closest to this locally is the occasional CSS Sailaire contest. One-design is a major component of sailboat racing where a tightly regulated class of boat is standardized as much as possible helping to level the equipment playing field which results in a focus on sailing -- or soaring talent. In many classes, budget is controled by restricting use of high-cost aramid fibers in the sails and only permitting use of standard aluminum section masts and booms, vs. costly carbon spars. Perhaps this could be implemented within the 2-meter event for the high-scoring pilot of a given desing. Ducks, Gnomes? The question is, which plane? Hmmm.
Here in Bakersfield, CA we are flying a one design class using the Laser Arts Sovereign kit. It a great little 2m RES kit. We require the tail to conform to the stock outlines and allow any reinforcement you care to add (tho the wing is quite strong enough as is.) We allow the rubber band mounted wing to be changed to bolt-on and you can change the one piece wing to two or three if you like. Other than that, the kits are built pretty much stock and are quite good flyers. Plus, the kits are quite reasonably priced. It makes a great little one design.
