I have built a number of winches for our club. I think buying heavy duty solenoids is a very good investment. You might spend an extra $20 to 30 total to increase the safety of your winch.
Heavy duty silver contact solenoids will run about $25 to 30. I've used the Cole Hesse #24037, or the Prestolite #15-133 with good results. I get mine at a parts store for industrial trucks, but they should be easy to get.
