Michael, I am active in ARCS, which operates the Palmer field. We usually have a couple thermal duration contests there each year. In addition, there is a slope combat group that gets together in Anchorage when the wind is blowing from the south, and a smaller but growing group of hand launch (mostly discus, now) glider pilots.
I've also flown a fair amount up in Hatcher Pass, which is sort of in your neighborhood... and very scenic.
