You might also be interested in similar threads on this mailing list
that dealt with the same question and the related question of
get_affected_rows() of the last insert/update. Just search the
archive for get_affected_rows and last_insert_id.
Joe Celko is the author of several books on SQL and has a rather
strong opinion on integer ids in general and auto_increment values
in particular. I find myself disagreeing with his general dislike of
integer ids but agreeing with the auto_increment part. In any case,
he may have more elabourate reasons on offer than me ;-)
