In French it's more like "veerus", and the "u" sounds like german "�", like in "�ber"
It's a sound that doesn't exist in English :)

Japanese imported the word from Germany.
Japanese doesn't have the sound "vi".
Then "virus" sounds like "wills (the last "s" is voiceless)" in Japanese.
