It depends on how you measure it. It certainly gives the US a run for its money (pun intended). The EU has a lower GDP, but it has a stronger currency and greater buying power. The lower GDP has to do with the relatively low development of the 10 new members compared to the previous 15. But the 10 new ones are growing faster than the 15 (or the US for that matter) so we can expect the EU to become the uncontested largest economy in the not-so-distant future.
