Name question for you. I have been told that in Spanish one name is formed very differently.
Not very.
Something like given names, father's surname, mother's surname and maybe something else.
That's not so different :-)
Based on /my/ experience as a Spaniard... yes, the usual is given name, father's surname then mother's surname. And then it can be extended as much as you like by going backwards recursively.
For example:
* My dad's surname is Carrera. * My mom's surname is Yanes. * I am Daniel Carrera Yanes [....]
* My dad's mom's surname is Pedroza * My mom's mom's surname is Puigbo * I am Daniel Carrera Yanes Pedroza Puigbo [...]
* My dad's mom's mom's surname is Perez * My mom's mom's mom's surname is Marchan * I am Daniel Carrera Yanes Pedroza Puigbo Perez Marchan [....]
You get the idea.
Notice, I don't have a middle name. If I did, I would add it between Daniel and Carrera.
Also, are surnames from parents as Johnson, places as Hansford,
occupations as in Cooper used in Spanish as it tends to be used in north European languages?
I can't discern an obvious pattern, no. Carrera means "race". Yanes doesn't mean anything AFAIK. Pedroza probably derives from the given name Pedro. Puigbo means "good mountain" in a less common variation of
Spanish.
Part of that is does this come from the influence of the Moors etc that invaded Spain?
I don't know much about Spanish history. I've never been to Spain. I can tell you a lot about Venezuelan history though. :-)
Cheers, Daniel.
