I'm pretty sure he was a naturalized U.S. citizen. And I believe he was originally from Switzerland.

Yes, I know he naturalized, I just never would have classified him as an American per se. I guess that is too restrictive of view on my part. it just surprised me. :)

I thought he was from Switzerland too, because he is always referred to as a Swiss patent clerk, but Germany didn't invade Switzerland did that (it is embarrassing that I just asked that) I thought it was a neutral country.
