The harm is that it's very poor design to have a single program that tries to do everything. It's not just a matter of bloat. The code quickly becomes unmanageable and stangant, and impossible to update or fix. Modularity is a very important principle of of proper design. It is a lot easier to maintain 10 programs of 1,000 lines each than one program of 10,000 lines.

Just to play devil's advocate here... So the design of MSO with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Frontpage, and Outlook being separate programs that "play nice" with each other is actually a better design than the monolithic OOo?
