Just thought I'd jump in here. Is it me, or is this "deja vu all over
again"? Much of what's been put forth here, email, browser, etc. was,
IIRC, extant in Star Office 5.2. Wasn't that the motto, "do everything
in one place"? It even had a "desktop" within it. I remember browsing,
editing jpg's, emailing, working with spread sheets and documents all in
Star Office 5.2.
I've worked with trying to get "computer solutions that work" for my
company for over 10 years now, and I've found that the average user is
nearly clueless about what they want their tools to do. What I have
found is that there is far less desire for program integration as for
information integration. My users don't give a care about using a
different program IF it can easily grab the information from the program
they just used. They will be far happier with a smaller tool set IF it
will leave the information in a format that the next program can grab
and make useful for the next task than a big "do-all" that leaves the
information unaccessible to anything else. The OASIS initiative is far
more important to me than how well OO.o does any particular task.
This is not a regular user mind set, but someone who has to make the
information available and useful to a regular user.
