Actually, it's "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations",
Rhode Island, also known as Aquidneck Island, being the fair-sized
island in Narragansett Bay that Newport is on.
There was some talk a few years ago, by the way, about changing the name
of the state to eliminate the word "Plantations", but it didn't happen.
