Yes, that projection can cause weird changes. However, if you take a line from about Norfolk over to north of Arizona, then another at the border, then another at the top of the western provinces then another slightly above the main land of the territories, the distance would be about the same. So the territories including Yukon would be from the west coast of CA to about Kansas City. Still fairly large. It is now devided into a number of territories. Chris
