good questions Matthias. We are also interested in providing a way to get product information and update the firmware. I guess most external CAN devices (USB, PCI boards) have at least additional informations like product string, serial number, hardware revision, ... Most USB interfaces provide correct product information via USB itself (device descriptor). But for PCI or onboard controllers this isn't possible. As this is a common task for all can* devices, we need a way to provide this information to candev.ko. Regarding firmware update. As this process is always pretty manufacturer specific, I don't see any need to build a general interface for it.
