Hi all,

A few months ago I purchased a 4801 with a lan1621 card and a 12V/1.5A
power supply.

I've noticed something odd happening occasionally when I supply power
to the board. Most of the time the box will boot cold with no
problems. Sometimes when powered up cold, and frequently when switched
off and back on again after less than a minute, the 4801 fails to do
its POST and just sits there doing nothing as far as I can tell. The
error and disk lights become lit and stay lit, network light is dark
but flickers occasionally (denoting that the hardware has seen a
packet on the link, perhaps?). But no POST, no booting, no activity at
all on the serial console. If I then switch it off and wait between
one and four minutes, when I switch it back on it will do its POST and
boot successfully. Pressing the reset button when the box is in its
"stuck" state doesn't seem to do anything useful.

The 4801 is using comBIOS 1.33.

I do not believe it is a problem with the compact flash card I'm
using: I've been able to replicate the problem with a SanDisk card
installed, or even with no card installed at all.

I thought it might be a power supply problem, so I acquired a third
party 15V/2A regulated power supply. I can still replicate the
problem, so I don't think it's the power supply which is at fault.

I have a another, older, 4801 with comBIOS 1.31 installed and no
lan1621 card. I haven't been able to get it to exhibit the problem
I've observed in the newer 4801.

It sounds a little like problems that have afflicted some 5501 users
(http://www.soekris.com/issue0005.htm or
http://www.soekris.com/Issue0007-8.htm). But this isn't a 5501.

If anyone has any hints or suggestions for further diagnosis or
treatment, it would be much appreciated. The box seems to run reliably
when it runs at all, but it's a little unsettling that it doesn't
power up properly consistently.

Regards, Jeff Horton.
