This message (from Sat Jan 3 20:45:15 UTC 2009) is very frustrating to me ...
http://Lists.Soekris.com/pipermail/soekris-tech/2009-January/015352.html

It seems related to my problem: the Soekris BIOS does not recognize boot
devices.

It is easily possible to get the Soekris to boot from PXEboot, and it is
easy and straightforward to install an OS, but you cannot get the Soekris
net5501 to boot via any method other than PXEboot.

What is the required magic to get the Soekris net5501 to boot from a
hard disk?

I read the messages about some Compact Flash disks not working, and the
warning to only use a SanDisk device, before I bought my hardware. But
I found nothing -- no warnings at all -- about hard disks. I wasn't
worried about the Compact Flash issue, because I planned to use a hard
drive. Now I see that I ought to have been worried.

Apparently, there need to be some warnings about hard drives as well.
Perhaps there needs to be a list of acceptable hard drives which work.
(Mine is a Fujitsu MHW2100BH 80 GB 2.5" laptop drive. It is not
recognized by the Soekris. It cannot be booted from, even though after
getting an OS up and running (via PXEboot), the disk works just fine.)

I'm still very frustrated. Very!!!!!

Please help!

Thanks,
Ken Hendrickson

PS My BIOS is 1.33. No c. No i. Just 1.33.
Will upgrading my BIOS solve these problems??

PPS If upgrading my BIOS will solve these problems, then why was I
shipped a board with a known non-working BIOS, when a working BIOS
was available???

What is the difference between Bios 1.33c and Bios 1.33i??

This page gives no details: http://www.Soekris.com/software/changelog.txt

Wondering if I should upgrade my Bios, and to what version ...

Thanks,

I have Bios 1.33. Bios 1.33c is available. Does it solve these problems???

Should I upgrade my Bios version??

Thanks,

PS IF Bios 1.33c solves the problems I am having, then why were my boards
shipped with 1.33? Why not make your customers happy with working products,
right out of the box? I'm very frustrated!!

Is it possible that I have this problem -- disks w/ more than 1024 cylinders
don't work AT ALL?
http://Lists.Soekris.com/pipermail/soekris-tech/2009-March/015597.html

My hard drive has more than 1024 cylinders, but all bootable partitions are
below the 1024 cylinder boundary. Still, is this the problem? Do Soekris
boards not work at all with disks that have more than 1024 cylinders? (If so,
this is a fairly large problem, because it is now probably impossible to find a
real hard drive with less than 1024 cylinders.)

(Very) Frustrated and Anxiously Awaiting Answers or Suggestions ...

Thanks,
Ken Hendrickson

Mischa & Soekris-Tech,

Did you ever figure out the solution to your Soekris booting problem?
http://Marc.info/?l=soekris-tech&m=115581919512700&w=2

I have a very similar problem. I have a Soekris net5501.
It has a SATA hard drive in it. I've successfully installed
OpenBSD, but I cannot boot it.

I also get the "No Boot device available" message,
and no matter what the BIOS settings, it always boots from
PXE immediately. I get no time whatsoever to enter the ^P to
enter the Bios Monitor program.

No matter what the BootDelay setting, the box always
boots immediately from PXE.

Searching the net has not provided a solution.

Do you remember how you solved it?

Thanks,
Ken Hendrickson
