putty is just fine as serial consoles on windows, I would:
turn flow control off.
the default terminal speed for the the soekris is 19.2 and putty
defaults to 9600, unless you cranked the soekris down to 9600
set putty to 19.2.
verify that you console cable setup is working with a known good
device
