Addressing only the question as to the ability to install Ubuntu. Sure, absolutely feasible. I haven't got a 4501, but I do have a bunch of 4801s and a 5501, and they all run Ubuntu Server.
Without X, that is. On a couple of occasions I've experimented with apps-with-GUIs (e.g. a MythTV slave backend which needed to be configured using a GUI app) running on Soekris hardware, and although they work they're not really fast enough to be comfortably usable. Here's a peek at a net5501 running Ubuntu: root@wendy:~# ssh skr03 Linux skr03 2.6.32-34-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 13 19:40:53 UTC 2011 i586 GNU/Linux Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Last login: Tue Oct 18 20:41:31 2011 from wendy.xperim.be root@skr03:~# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 3667008 1242412 2238320 36% / none 250060 160 249900 1% /dev none 254668 0 254668 0% /dev/shm none 254668 120 254548 1% /var/run none 254668 4 254664 1% /var/lock none 254668 0 254668 0% /lib/init/rw I'm using this machine mainly as a broadband router (VDSL and wifi). It also runs openvpn and a reverse proxying apache. So nothing complicated or resource-intensive. Plenty fast enough.
