I don't know.  As you noticed, it happens after the machine has
been running for a while and is circumvented by powering off for
some time, so it looks like a kind of thermal failure.

When the machine resets--whether by reboot from the operating system,
reboot from comBIOS, pressing the reset switch, or issuing "reset"
from the uManager--it doesn't come up again.  Mine usually showed
no output at all, but occasionally it would start to POST and hang
then.

One thought I had is that the reset circuit might be failing, but
I have no idea how that is implemented on the net6501: old-school
discrete circuitry, a dedicated reset IC, or as part of the Intel
chipset?

Back when the first batch of net5501s had a bad capacitor, Soekris
Europe resoldered the correct component and returned the board.
That they exchanged the whole net6501 board (different MAC addresses!)
for this reboot failure would suggest that it isn't easily fixable.
