Setting render output paths in Maya

So lemme get this straight... Maya's equivalent of XSI's 'Scene Output' 
path is actually stored at the /project level/? If I set this path using 
'Change Primary Image Directory' and setting the Images output path, 
does this not get passed on to other scenes in the same project? Or is 
it changed strictly for the scene I'm in?
