Ive just proved that the mailhost will accept connections from my server, in that i telnet'd to prot 25 on the mailhost from my server and could enter the cmds to create an email to the external address ok, so it looks to me as thou the mail is never getting out of sendmail on my host

Yes, the mailhost must do the dnslookup.

Verify your firewall logs and verify that the firewall does allow the traffic through.  Look for the IP from (server sending the mail to the mailhost) and port 25 (default sendmail port)

Verify on the mailhost (if Solaris) that the /etc/mail/relay-domains has the IP address of the server sending the mail (this is just an IP address per line)

I'm using servers in the same network segment, thus if you are jumping from one segment to another, it might complicate the set-up and I will not be able to help with that (NAT rules etcetera)

Have done this buy am still getting Name server timeout.

This box is the other side of the firewall and should be relaying onto my mailhost, but doesn't get that far. I assume that the box I am relaying too should be doing the dns lookup

Try this:
edit /etc/hosts and add entry for mailhost

vi /etc/mail/sendmail.cf

go to section CP. and add line if not exists

DSrelay:mailhost.***.***

bounce sendmail daemon

/etc/init.d/sendmail stop
/etc/init.d/sendmail start

With point 3 the mail should be fowarded to our site mailserver which has the access to do the lookups, but it looks as thou my sun box is doing it rather than just forwarding on. How do I tell it to just forward on?

Hello Nick,

Can't help you here :-(

AFAIK sendmail queues every message and then at given intervals polls the message queue and process messages that are there. So, no you're not right, as sendmail doesn't batch messages. I think that you can change polling interval in config file of sendmail ( depends on you sendmail version )

Yes, solve DNS issue there. Are you sure that your system know what is the IP of mail exchanger of yyyy.com ? Are you sure that your system asks DNS server that knows the answer ? Try nslookup and type yyyy.com for example.

Peter
