I did not set up the computers in our department, and I do not have that much experience with Solaris (my experience is primarily with Linux and FreeBSD).

Each of our computers has a directory off the root directory called /space. I've noticed that when I set up users on these computers (using the useradd script), a home directory is created for them in /space/home/[user-name]. But the strange thing is that a user directory is created for them in /usr/home/[user-name] as well.

Why are two user directories being created? Only the /usr/home directory seems to be used for storing user data and preferences -- however, it has also confused me from time to time as I go about maintaining these computers.

Am I missing something fundamentally important about Solaris 8 and 9?
