All,
Are there any (free, cheap) drivers that will work with a 3Com 3c556
Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter in Dell Latitude C600 with Solaris 10?
Thanks,
Will
hello Will,
i installed today solaris 10 build s10_72 on my latitude c800. it uses
the 3Com 3C556 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter. i got it working using the
procedure described in this post:
http://forum.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=20001&messageID=54558
as described in the post the when i rebooted the MAC address of the card
showed as ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff, more than that - even with all
configuration files in place ifconfig -a did not show the correct ip
address/subnetmask and /etc/defaultrouter was not functioning. i set up
a script that i put in /etc/rc2.d to configure the interface with
ifconfig set the ip, subnetmask and MAC address and set the default gateway.
i also had to setup the bios to try to boot from the net first in order
to get a link.
it is an ugly way to make it work but other than that the network seems
to function properly.
i also found this:
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/xperts/sessions/09_solx86/questions2.html#21
"The problem with your system is that you are using a mini-PCI device
that we do not currently support. If I recall correctly it is a 3Com
3C556 network device. I currently know of no driver that works for it.
Someone told me they got the elxl driver working by adding the device ID
for it to the system, but I have been told by 3Com that these are not
compatible devices and I know of several people that were not able to do
the same thing.
I hope we will get 3Com to write their own driver in the future. They
have written Solaris drivers in the past."
greetings,
Stoyan
