More research led me to http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zones/faq/#rm-ram which is "Q: How can I limit the memory used by a container?" and says rcapd is the only way. Two below that is "Q: Can swap space usage be managed?" which says that swap management is planned for a future release.

I'm still not 100% clear on rcapd, though. It seems root in a subzone can work around the limits imposed by rcapd, can anyone verify this, or is there some way to unconditionally restrict the physical memory resources a zone can use?

Thanks,
