Hi folks! A true Solaris n00b "on the beginning of a great journey" here, and the first post to this list after lurking for a while. I hope this isn't *too* excruciating for seasoned admins to read. So, here we go.....
We're considering Solaris deployment to use ZFS, so as a proof of concept I'm trying to get Solaris installed on a "frankenputer". Although not altogether necessary, I also want to get a GUI up and running - for no other reason than just to do it. Gnome is Gnome after all, so no surprises there :) The little test box is a "Shuttle" barebones system. A Celeron of some vintage or other, a H/D, 1GB of memory, and an embedded video chip. The latter is what's driving me nuts. Solaris doesn't have any clue what it is, and as a result coughs up a mangled screen regardless of whatever variables I put into kdmconfig. (Note: on the production ZFS system of course, no desktop would be running. I guess I should add that for posterity) My question to this august community therefore is simply this; is there any "default" setting which would give; "a-display-of-some-kind-no-matter-what"? Meaning (I guess) a safe video card choice which might be a bit on the conservative side, perhaps yielding sub-optimal quality/lower resolution/whatever but will at least reveal a desktop? Regards & TIA from an aspiring "Solaris'er" -Colin _______________________________________________ Solaris-Users mailing list [email protected] http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/solaris-users
