Thomas: I have not looked at any of the patch updates since my last comment,
but it is my sincere plan to spend some serious time on this issue this week if
possible -- and if not, then starting on Jan2 when i get back from vacation.
(it's on my "work" todo list not just my "spare time apache" todo list)
