I have used the

from ehcache for a few years and never had any troubles...
There may be something smaller out there though.
Re "Do we really need a zipping for any other response?"... The point of using
standards based approach is that the client can decide. Essentially we could
enable gzip for the whole web application and let each request say if the
response should be gzipped.
