OK, why can't you switch the clauses from Joel's suggestion? Something like: q=Malaysia plane crash&rq={!rerank reRankDocs=1000 reRankQuery=$myquery}&myquery=*:*&sort=date+desc
(haven't tried this yet, but you get the idea....).
