Right. So, you want to use Trie fields for search performance, and doc values for more efficient faceting/sorting. Trie fields and doc values aren't the same.
On your field definition in your schema, you need to add docValues="true". You'll need to re-index from scratch in order to build the docValues for your field. As has been said here before, if at all possible, with a schema change like that, wipe the index and start again.
