Hmmm, you may want to investigate the new "no-war" solution. Solr runs as a service with start/stop scripts. Currently it uses an underlying Jetty container, but that will (probably) eventually change and is pretty much considered an "implementation detail". Not quite sure whether it'd be easier or harder for you though.
