This is somewhere in the mail archives. The AND/OR/NOT syntax is binary. The
+/- syntax is ternary: (+one -two three) means: "must have one, cannot have
two, things with three have a higher score".

Which analyzer are you using?  The StandardRequestHandler should give the
results you are looking for, following
http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrQuerySyntax .  The DisMaxRequestHandler, on
the other hand, respects "+" and "-" modifiers, but ignores field-specific
searching.
