This has not been ported back to the 3.X line yet - mostly because it involved some rather large and invasive changes that I wanted to bake on trunk for some time first.
Even still, the back port is not trivial, so I don't know that it's something I'd personally be able to get to in the short term. If I had any free time, I'd probably prefer pushing towards a 4 release with NRT. Some of the changes also broke back compat behavior in ways that are more acceptable over a major release. Someone else might jump in and do the work of course.
