It was NOT about suspend/resume, it was about the auto-dimming when on battery and when idle that gnome-power-manager is doing. The problem is that when you are at 80% while working, then it will be dimmed to 40% when idle, and when going back it will be only up at 60% (NUMBERS ARE FAKE, but to give you an idea what the effect is). Anway, your hack around saving/restoring the video space might be useful for some.
