Concerning reboots: I can't say how many reboots are necessary. Since I forgot one thing or the other during setup, I shut down and booted a couple of times until it worked. If someone can confirm your observation I will of course include it.
I'm pretty sure you need to shutdown with the kernel parameter set. So 1st boot sets the parameter, then shutdown. 2nd boot everything works.
... obviously the dance around the desk is optional, but I certainly included this step too :-)
