When you are testing the modification of the backlight are you doing so whilst using the Intel or Nvidia card? I think there are known issues with regards to adjusting the backlight with the Nvidia card. Also were you able to get compiz working with the Intel card? I've still yet to get there with my VPCZ12CGX/x... Are you using an xorg.conf while using the Intel card? For video switching I personally and running a modified BIOS and that has been working great!
