Double-standards in Balkans

West promote Muslim independence, Christian dependence

Publishing Date: 09.04.06 16:44

At the same time Western powers are doing everything to promote the
secession of the Albanian Muslim-majority Kosovo province from Serbia, they
are supporting the extinguishing of the last vestiges of autonomy for the
Serb entity, Republika Srpska, in neighboring Bosnia, which has a Muslim
plurality.

On March 31, 2006, the Bosnia-Herzegovina Constitutional Court
considered the request of the Bosnian Muslim president of the
Bosnia-Herzegovina Joint Presidency, Sulejman Tihic, for an assessment of
the constitutionality of the flag, seal, anthem, religious and secular state
holidays of Republika Srpska.

The court ruled Articles 2 and 3 of the Republika Srpska Constitutional Law
on the Flag, Seal and Anthem are not in accordance with the BiH
Constitution, specifically, the section relating to the International
Convention on Discontinuation of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The Republika Srpska National Assembly has been ordered to harmonize the
cited provisions with the BiH Constitution within six months from the date
of the publication of this decision in the Bosnia-Herzegovina Official
Gazette.

While the decision also applied to the symbols of Bosnia’s other two
constituent peoples, the Croats and the Muslims, the target is clear.

Krstan Simic, a member of the Republika Srpska Representative Team before
the BiH Constitutional Court, said this decision by the BiH Constitutional
Court was both expected and unexpected.

"I would be more concerned by the position of Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim)
representatives in the process who were insisting on the annulment of
everything associated with
the history and articulating the existence of Serbs in this region," added
Simic.

The decision was passed with the help of Western appointed foreign judges
sitting on the Bosnian Constitutional Court, with the votes of the 3 foreign
judges and 2 Bosnian Muslim judges overruling the 4 total votes of the
Christian Serb and Croatian judges.

At the same time, the black double-headed eagle of the Kosovo Albanians
hangs from all of Kosovo’s U.N.-supported institutions, and the Albanians
are receiving open Western support for their independence drive during the
current “final status” talks on the province, chaired by Marti Ahtisaari,
appointed to the task by U.N. General Secretary, Kofi Annan.

The goal of the asymmetrical approach is to minimize the chances of Bosnian
Serbs asking for independence from Bosnia should Albanians be granted
independence from Serbia. And the best way of doing this is to take away all
the possible markings of potential statehood from Republika Srpska, the Serb
entity.

The president of Republika Srpska, Dragan Cavic, stated that the decision of
the BiH Constitutional Court is a ”serious blow to political relations in
Bosnia-Herzegovina and that it completely radicalizes all political
relations, awakens distrust among the citizens and does not contribute to
the stabilization but to the destabilization of relations.”

Republika Srpska prime minister Milorad Dodik said that the BiH
Constitutional Court does not have jurisdiction in this matter.

"Regardless of what the decision is, for the Republika Srpska government it
is not one that can be implemented. If they think that they can make
decisions in this way, that's their problem," said Dodik.

He added that the Republika Srpska government will not debate this issue but
that no one can throw out the flag and seal in his office.

It is apparent that, in trying to smooth the Kosovo Albanians’ drive to
independence, Western diplomats are willing to risk the destabilization of a
neighboring state. Apparently, certain Western circles consider it of
paramount importance to establish another Muslim-dominated state in the
Balkans, at any cost. Back in February 1992, U.S. ambassador Warren
Zimmerman, talked the then-Bosnian president, Alija Izetbegovic, to withdraw
his signature from the so-called Lisbon Plan, which was an agreement of
Bosnia’s 3 constituent peoples to reach a peaceful solution based on
federalization of the republic. Zimmerman was quoted as saying that he
thought that Izetbegovic, an open Muslim fundamentalist, “could get a better
deal.” The present policy seems a continuation of the same, seeking to
secure a “better deal” for radical Islamic interests in the region.
