Kosovo police, Albanian extremists clash
Jun. 9, 2006 at 9:55AM

A U.N. official says about 50 ethnic Albanians were arrested and a dozen
were injured in clashes with police in Serbia's Kosovo province.
Soren Jessen-Petersen, chief of the U.N. mission in Kosovo said the
pro-independence demonstrators were "lost people" who do not contribute to
positive processes for the province, Serbia's Beta news agency reported
Friday.

He said the street protests and demonstrations of the ethnic Albanian
Self-determination Movement serves only the enemies of Kosovo's
independence.

Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku, an ethnic Albanian, said such
demonstrations should not be tolerated as they could only prolong Kosovo's
struggle for independence.

The government in Belgrade wants Kosovo to remain a Serbian province,
though with increased autonomy, while ethnic Albanians, who make up 90
percent of Kosovo's population, demand independence from Belgrade.

For two days about 1,000 supporters of the Self-determination Movement
blocked the entrance to the U.N. mission in Pristina demanding
Jessen-Petersen and his team withdraw from Kosovo.

The protesters also demanded the talks between Serbs and ethnic
Albanians being moderated by the U.N. overseers in Kosovo to help determine
the province's future be disbanded. The talks are trying to determine who
will govern Kosovo once U.N. and NATO personnel leave. The protesters also
called for an immediate vote on independence.
