Israel fears soldiers could be sent to Iran

Israel claims that Hezbollah militants holding two Israeli soldiers are
trying to transfer them to Iran. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said it had
gathered information prompting those concerns. Earlier the Lebanese
government demanded a comprehensive ceasefire and an end to the offensive by
Israel. This comes after Israel sent warships into Lebanese territorial
waters to impose a blockade on Lebanon's ports and launched air strikes on
two airports in Beirut.
At least 44 civilians are reported to have been killed so far in Israeli air
strikes on southern Lebanon. Israel says two civilians were killed and 35
wounded in Hezbollah rocket attacks across northern Israel. The EU says
Israel's use of force in Lebanon is disproportionate.

Israel bombs Palestinian foreign ministry

An Israeli air strike has destroyed the Palestinian Foreign Ministry
building in Gaza City. At least 10 people in neighbouring buildings were
injured in the blast. Israel has been waging an offensive in the Gaza Strip
aimed at stopping Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli towns and freeing an
Israeli soldier who was captured by Palestinian militants two weeks ago. A
total of 23 Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Wednesday. That's the
highest death toll in a single day since the Israeli offensive began.

Bush, Merkel meet in Stralsund

US President George W. Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have held a
press conference in the Baltic coast resort of Stralsund. The two leaders
said they had used their meeting to discuss the nuclear stand-off with Iran,
North Korea, and the evolving crisis in the Middle East. Bush said Israel
had the right to defend itself however at the same time he urged the
leadership not to destabilise the Lebanese government. Chancellor Merkel
called for a de-escalation of the conflict. Merkel had invited Bush to the
resort, which is located in the heart of her constituency, during her visit
to Washington in May. From Germany, Bush is due to travel on to St.
Petersburg for the G-8 summit.

Ukraine's Yushchenko rejects PM nominee

Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko has rejected the nomination as prime
minister of his former presidential rival Viktor Yanukovych.
Yushchenko told parliament that the proposals and personnel put forward by
the new coalition were not in line with constitutional requirements. He also
hinted that he may call new elections in an effort to end Ukraine's
political crisis. Yanukovych's pro-Russian party recently forged a coalition
with the communists and the socialists, who defected from a pro-Western
"orange" alliance.

UK soldiers hand over Iraq province

For the first time since the invasion of Iraq, Britain has handed back to
the Iraqis responsibility for security in one of the country's 18 provinces.
In a formal ceremony, the British commander of coalition forces in southern
Iraq, Major General John Cooper, signed the agreement transferring power in
Muthanna back to Iraqi security forces. The event was attended by Iraqi
Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki who described it as a great day in the
history of Iraq. Although the numbers involved were small, just 700 British
and Australian soldiers, the British and US governments hope that it will
mark the beginning of a process which will eventually allow the control of
the entire country to be handed back to the Iraqis.

Caspian Sea pipeline opens

A strategically important pipeline carrying oil from the Caspian Sea to the
Turkish port of Ceyhan has officially been opened. The almost 1,800-km long
pipeline links Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and oil will then be shipped
to Western markets. At full capacity the pipeline will carry a million
barrels of crude oil a day. Western nations hope it will reduce dependence
on oil from the Middle East.

India accuses militant group of bombings

Police in India say that Tuesday's co-ordinated train bombings in Mumbai,
which killed around 190 people and wounded more than 700, bore the signature
of a Pakistan-based Islamic militant group called Lashkar-e-Taiba. A
spokesman for the group, however, denied any role it what he termed a
barbaric act. Mumbai's police chief said that more than 250 people have been
questioned in connection with the bombings over the past two days and that
20 people have been arrested. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit
Mumbai, which is India's financial capital, on Friday.

Coalition, Afghan forces kill 19 rebels

US-led coalition and Afghan forces have killed at least 19 Taliban rebels in
a counter-offensive in southern Afghanistan. The fighting came after some
200 Taliban militants surrounded a police headquarters in the town of Nawzad
in Helmand province. A provincial spokesman said coalition warplanes
launched air strikes during the battle, killing at least 12 Taliban while
they were trying to flee in a vehicle. Helmand province has been
particularly hard hit by insurgent violence this year. More than 2,000
British forces have been deployed there to try and impose stability in the
region.

Blair's fundraiser again quizzed by police

A close ally of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was arrested yesterday,
has returned to a London police station for further questioning. He is
helping police with inquiries in connection with allegations that national
honours were awarded to people after they made substantial donations or
loans to the governing Labour Party.
Lord Levy, Labour's chief fundraiser denies any wrongdoing. The case has
been heavily reported by the British Press due to Lord Levy's proximity to
the Prime Minister.

Three UK bankers extradited to US

Three English bankers accused of being involved in the collapse of the
American energy concern, Enron, have been extradited to face prosecution in
the United States. The so-called NatWest Three because they work for the
British NatWest bank are on their way to a court in Texas. Their case has
caused concern in some quarters, and both houses in the British Parliament
voted to protest against Britain's compliance with a 2003 extradition treaty
which has not been ratified by the US Senate. Thousands of people in the
United States lost their jobs and life savings when Enron collapsed at the
end of 2001 with debts of an estimated 40 billion dollars.

FIFA launches probe against Materazzi

Football's world governing body FIFA has opened a disciplinary inquiry into
the behaviour of Italian world cup-winning defender Marco Materazzi during
the recent final against France. He was headbutted by French midfielder
Zinedine Zidane who said on Wednesday that Materazzi had repeatedly insulted
his family during the game. FIFA has summoned both players to attend a
hearing later this month.

Regensburg on World Heritage list

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation,
UNESCO, has added the historic old town of Regensburg to the World Heritage
list. The decision came during a meeting of the World Heritage Committee in
the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. The Bavarian town had been vying for
inclusion on the list for the past 20 years. Germany has more than 30 sites
on the World Heritage list.

Oil hits $76 a barrel

Oil prices have hit a new high in response to instability in the Middle
East. Light, sweet crude oil for delivery in August has reached an all time
high of $76.25 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, surpassing the
previous high of $75.78 set during trading last Friday. Observers say the
increase is directly related to escalating violence in the Middle East, the
stand-off with Iran over its nuclear program and news of explosions on
Nigerian pipelines.
