Associated Press August 15, 2008 Russia warns NATO, criticizes missile deal -"There is no Iran in the north of Europe, but there is Russia there. This system from the beginning is aimed at the neutralization of Russian nuclear assets." -Rogozin said the Russian military intervention in Georgia showed the West should not underestimate Moscow. BRUSSELS, Belgium - Russia's ambassador to NATO warned the Western alliance Friday not to cut ties with Moscow over the fighting in Georgia, saying it would harm both sides. Dmitry Rogozin accused the United States of threatening to "destroy" the NATO-Russian Council which was set up in 2002 to improve relations between the Cold War foes. "Through media we find out that Americans threaten to destroy the NATO-Russia Council, to punish Russia," he told reporters. "But who needs this NATO-Russia Council? It's a common interest." The United States has called an emergency meeting of NATO foreign ministers for Tuesday to discuss the crisis in Georgia. Western diplomats in Brussels said the meeting would look at the future of the alliance's relations with Moscow in the wake of the invasion [sic] of Georgia, but said there was no immediate expectation it would lead to calls to disband the NATO-Russia Council. NATO nations have refused Russian calls for a meeting since the outbreak of fighting, but the alliance's secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said this week that the council could meet soon. Rogozin was fiercely critical of U.S. support for Georgia and of the agreement Thursday between Poland and the United States on the deployment of U.S. anti-missile interceptors in Poland. He repeated claims that the missile shield is aimed at Russia's nuclear deterrent, rather than a possible threat from Iran, as Washington insists. "There is no Iran in the north of Europe, but there is Russia there," he said through a translator. "This system from the beginning is aimed at the neutralization of Russian nuclear assets." The Pentagon has repeatedly rejected such claims from Russia, insisting the site in Poland and a linked radar base in the Czech Republic are the optimum locations for countering a potential ballistic missile attack from Iran aimed at Europe or North America. Rogozin said the Russian military intervention in Georgia showed the West should not underestimate Moscow. "Our critics are like a wolf who says to a cow 'we will devour you because we are hungry.' Well, we are not a cow. We are a Russian bear," he said. ------------------------------------ =============== Group Moderator: [Е-ПОШТА ЗАШТИЋЕНА] page at http://magazine.sorabia.net for more informations about current situation in Serbia http://www.sorabia.net Slusajte GLAS SORABIJE nas talk internet-radio (Serbian Only) http://radio.sorabia.net Yahoo!
