      French Foreign Min Kouchner: 'We Fear War, Don't Want One'


PARIS (AFP)--French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner told French 
television Tuesday: "*We fear a war* and we don't want one."


Questioned about a statement by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that 
Russia was not afraid of a new Cold War, Kouchner said, "If it's only 
cold, that's not a problem."


"We fear a war and we don't want one," he told public France 2 
television. "If it's hot, we don't want it."


Kouchner also said Russian troops are about to "ethnically cleanse" the 
South Ossetia town of Akhalgori, which includes ethnic Georgians among 
its inhabitants, "tonight."


"This is not acceptable," Kouchner said.


In an interview with French LCI television, Russian President Dmitry 
Medvedev said Europe would be responsible for any deterioration in 
relations with Moscow.


"If they want relations to worsen, they will get it," Medvedev said. "We 
will do everything we can to avoid" a new Cold War, he said. "In this 
situation, the ball is in the Europeans' court."


The European Union and the United States Tuesday heavily criticized 
Russia's recognition of the rGeorgian provinces of Abkhazia and South 
Ossetia as independent states.

  Kušner: Plašim se rata

Šef francuske diplomatije Bernar Kušner (Bernard Kouchner) večeras je
rekao da se "plaši rata"

On je to rekao u intervjuu za drugi kanal francuske televizije, povodom
tenzija sa Rusijom i strahovanja Zapada od obnavljanja "Hladnog rata".

Upitan o izjavi ruskog predsednika Dmitrija Medvedeva da se ne plaši
novog "Hladnog rata", iako ga ne želi, Kušner je rekao da nije strašno
ako se ostane na tome da bude "hladan".

"Strahuje se od rata i mi ga ne želimo", rekao je šef francuske diplomatije.

Kušner je u intervjuu optužio ruske snage da tokom noći pripremaju
"etničko čišćenje" u Gruziji, tako što će isterati gruzijsko
stanovništvo iz grada Ahalgorija koji je posle ruske intervencije u
Gruziji, prešao u ruke južnoosetijskih vlasti.

"Priča se da će ove noći (između utorka i srede) ruske snage potiskivati
ispred sebe, što je etničko čišćenje, gruzijsko stanovništvo prema
Gruziji kako bi Osetija bila homogena", rekao je Kušner.

On je rekao da je to "neprihvatljivo".

Ahalgori ima oko 8.000 stanovnika i nalazi se severozapadno od Tbilisija.

Područje Ahalgorija je u vreme Sovjetskog Saveza bilo deo Južne Osetije,
ali više nije deo te oblasti koja je de fakto nezavisna od gruzijskih
vlasti od početka 1990-tih godina i sada želi da se otcepi.

Visoki komesarijat UN za izbeglice (UNHCR) saopštio je danas, navodeći
izjave raseljenih, da oružane grupe u bezbednosnoj zoni pod kontrolom
ruskih snaga duž Južne Osetije, primoravaju stanovništvo da beži.
